15th Annual St. Joseph Jubilee Jog: "IZ" Kamakawiwo`ole's Classic Picked For our Theme Music

Pacific Islands - Wonderful World
January 19, 2009
Christina Roden

Even a decade after his death at age 38 in 1997, Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole remains Hawaii's best-known and most beloved singer. His career began when he and his older brother, Skippy, formed a group in their hometown near Honolulu. The two performed together until the latter died in 1982. The band continued on for some years but it was Iz's haunting voice, with its searing yet limpid falsetto, that captured the popular imagination. Indeed, his 'ukulele-laced version of "Over the Rainbow" is widely thought to be the only interpretation that could possibly stand up to Judy Garland's original.

511+ Runners For Our 14th Annual St. Joseph Jubilee Jog 5 K!

Dear Friends and Supporters of the St. Joseph Jubilee Jog:

Thanks for all of your prayers we dodged an incredible weather bullet for with all the thunder, lightning and rain early this morning - beginning at 3 am - it felt as if Noah and his Ark could have sailed through the north shore. Here's the picture I took of Bent Park (Evanston) on the way to St. Joseph School this morning. I took this picture hoping and praying that the weather would continue to improve for our run.

Upon arriving at St. Joseph school the first thing I did was thank one of the nuns who were so kind to move their cars to the other side of the parking lot to make room for our food and beverage tables. Here's a shot of the sun rising over St. Joseph School. (click pictures to enlarge)

We had 361 runners registered as of Saturday and another 150+ runners sign up this morning for our run for a total of 511 + runners.

Start Of The 14th Annual Jubilee Jog 5 K

Here's a shot of our first place finisher, Rafael Jimenez - 17 min 16 sec (Pace 5:34) - who hails from Des Plains and works with one of our sponsors, Jerry's Barbershop:

Kara Pellaton from Wilmette was our first place female finisher with a time of 20:29 - 20th place overall (pace 6:36):

I will be posting more pictures, names and videos soon.

I'd like to acknowledge the support of my co-chairs Maria McCanna and Janet Walberer and on their behalf I'd like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers for rallying behind this great cause to pull of a very successful 14th Annual Jog!

Peace and God Bless,

Fred Smart

RAIN OR SHINE WE WILL RUN/WALK!!

Dear Friends and Supporters of the St. Joseph Jubilee Jog:

The weather forecast is looking like we just might make it through tomorrow morning unscathed as they are predicting some showers early in the morning near Lake Geneva and in Lake County along the lakefront. Showers are expected to move through the area - more toward the southern side of Chicago - by mid to late afternoon.

Regardless of the weather, all systems are a go for tomorrow's 14th Annual St. Joseph Jubilee Jog 5 K Run/Walk. As of last night we have nearly 400 runners signed up. We had a very good turnout of new runners signing up in person and registered runners picking up their bags at Runners Edge yesterday.

Thanks to Peapod, our BIG shipment of food - nutrigrain bars and bananas - and water arrived this morning - a very generous donation from Peapod worth $500!! Jewel and Dominicks chipped in to help out with food. Caribou is providing us with 5 gallons of coffee and iced tea and Corner Bakery is providing us with 200 additional bottles water. We'll have plenty of chips for our runners from Frontera Foods and we hope to have have plenty of Dunkin donuts for our volunteers.

We'll have plenty of music, games for the kids, prizes and fun for everyone.

Keep praying for good weather and we look forward to seeing you tomorrow bright and early!!

Thanks again for all of your help, support and prayers!

Peace and God Bless,

The 2008 St. Joseph Jubilee Jog Organizing Team

Packet Pickup Today 10am - 5 pm At Runners Edge....Beautiful Weekend Ahead!!

Dear Friends and Supporters of The St. Joseph School Jubilee Jog:

As they say at the races, we are "spinning out of the turn" toward the finish line which is the start of our 14th Annual 5 K run/walk on Monday, Memorial Day at 8 am. With your prayers it looks like we might just make it under wire for they're expecting some rain late in the day on Monday with a high of 73 and a low of 48 degrees.

Thanks to Billy Zigmond our T-Shirts are finished and look great! Close to 300 runners have signed up as of last evening and at the Annual St. Joseph School/Parish Pasta Dinner last night some 60+ runners bags were handed out.

Today you can pick up your runners bags today from 10 am to 5 pm over at Runners Edge - 335 Ridge Rd # E Wilmette (847) 853-8531. The special "pre-race" sign up price of $27 (adults 15 yrs and over) and $15 (children 14 & under) will be honored all day today. The Race Day Registration price will bump up to $35 and $20 on Monday (Memorial Day).

We have lots of prizes, music, food and fun planned for our run on Monday. If that waistline is getting a bit round and you have any bagels, donuts or cookies laying around your home feel free to bring some along for Monday. We should have enough for our runners, but we need to feed all these hard working volunteers who, like me, have been great at expanding their waistlines. Maria McCanna at 847-530-9395 should be able to coordinate some of this "last minute" food donations.

We'd like to thank all the volunteers who helped stuff our bags this past Thursday evening and who are planning to volunteer for the many jobs required to pull this event off on race day. Finally, a big round of thanks to our many sponsors - new and old alike - who have graciously provided us with their support in the form of cash, in-kind donations for prizes, word of mouth referrals and much needed window display access for our many banners around the north shore.

Keep the prayers coming for good weather at race time Monday morning at 8 am!!

Thanks again!

Peace and God Bless,

The Jubilee Jog Organizing Team
